Map of study sites
The landscape heterogeneity created by glacier activity makes a complex distribution of water into the fjords, resulting in different hydrographic conditions. The sector is influenced by the South Pacific Current, and Cape Horn Current (Piñones & Garces, 2016). The glacio-fluvial contribution due to melting and the marine transgression process occurred after deglaciation influenced the productivity patterns along the fjords. Yellow dots are sediment core sites included in this study and currently investigated in collaboration with Laboratories GEOPS and RCMG. (imagen B) The site for obtaining recent and core sediment is indicated with a yellow star in the El Rincón estuarine system and low salinity coastal waters on the Argentine coast. (imagen A) Red star indicates the area for archeological sites prospection. Green dotes indicate sites for current projects that include permanent monitoring on hydrographic conditions. From North to South several icefields are observed. NPI: North Patagonian Icefield; SPI: South Patagonian Icefield; GCI: Gran Campo Nevado Icefield; IRI: Isla Riesco Icefield; ISI: Isla Santa Inés Icefield; CDI:Cordillera Darwin Icefield.
